Not all Microdermabrasion was created equal. Microdermabrasion certainly isn’t the new kid on the skincare block, but when it’s combined with other treatments like chemical peels or hydrating masks, it can pack a serious punch and show significant results in your skin.

There is a real lack of information available for clients about the different kinds of microdermabrasion. We have often had guests come to Museo in Perth saying that they have had many series of microdermabrasion treatments in the past, but have only ever had one kind of microdermabrasion. The different kinds of microdermabrasion should really be used for different skin types and to achieve different results – so what options are open to you for microdermabrasion?

DIAMOND MICRODERMABRASION

Diamond Microdermabrasion is the most common type you will find in most beauticians and Spa’s. These treatments utilise a diamond-tipped want that is used to scratch or sand away the top level of the skin. The machine’s vacuum system then sucks away dirt, debris and dead skin cells. This is often the first option people are offered if they have never had microdermabrasion before as it is effective even on sensitive skins and gives a deep exfoliation. This is a fantastic treatment choice for younger clients with more supple skin or as a booster treatment just before a big event – like your wedding or birthday – to give you a real glow in your skin. It is, however, not as effective on irregular surfaces – like wrinkles and lines – as there are no crystals that fit the exact regularities of the skin.

CRYSTAL MICRODERMABRASION

Now we are getting into the serious stuff. Crystal Microdermabrasion is an ablative (meaning minimally invasive) procedure designed to remove the outer surface of the skin by means of force or friction. A crystal microdermabrasion treatment involves a hand-held device that propels a high-speed flow of aluminium oxide crystals at the skin. Think similar to sandblasting, while the vacuum system sucks away the dirt, dead skin cells and used crystals from the surface of your skin. The ablative nature can sound more extreme than it really is. Yes, it does remove the outer layer of skin but a slight reddening skin is all that occurs afterwards as well as a feeling like your kin has a little windburn. No downtime really and after a day or so the skin feels relatively back to normal and you can wear makeup the following day – not a problem. Aluminium oxide crystals are the most commonly used abrasive agent as they are one of the hardest minerals on the planet and its irregular crystal shape means that it can get into harder-to-reach crevices like wrinkles, lines and particularly in the lines of your face around the nose and mouth. Aluminum Oxide is also an inert material and it causes no allergic or adverse reactions. It is not toxic when ingested and is non-carcinogenic. Crystal microdermabrasion is going to be too strong for sensitive or young skins but achieves much more effective results on older or sun damaged skins that really need a push to see that same glowing, shiny result. Crystal Microdermabrasion will produce a deeper peel or exfoliation result than a Diamond Microdermabrasion treatment, making it a great solution if you’ve tried microdermabrasion before but want to see more significant results.

When we talk about Diamond Microdermabrasion vs. Crystal Microdermabrasion, we are talking about two different techniques designed to achieve the same result on different skin types. Crystal Microdermabrasion is more like sandblasting – serious clean for hard to reach areas, while Diamond Microdermabrasion can be compared to Sandpaper – best used on softer surfaces but will still deliver the goods.
